Alexander B. Dagum, MD, FRCS(C), FACS
Dr. Alex Dagum received his undergraduate education from Queen’s University at Kingston, studying both engineering and mathematics, before earning his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, where he graduated first in his class. After completing a surgical internship in his hometown of Ottawa at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Dr. Dagum went on to attend the University of Toronto where he spent his initial residency years in neurosurgery and general surgery.
Dr. Dagum is an avid outdoors person and enjoys skiing, biking, and surfing.
He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Toronto and a one-year microsurgery fellowship with a strong focus on head and neck and craniofacial surgery in Toronto, followed by a one-year fellowship in hand surgery in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He joined the faculty of plastic surgery at the University of Toronto and five years later took a position back at Stony Brook University where he rose to the rank of tenured Professor of Surgery. At Stony Brook he served as Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery, Interim Chair of Surgery, and Co-Director of the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Program. He subsequently joined New York Plastic Surgical Group where he has continued to focus on adult and pediatric reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery and served as the prior Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency and Fellowship Program.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dagum has received numerous clinical, educational, and research awards. He served as the past President of the Ontario Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Ontario Medical Association Section Chair for Plastic Surgery. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society as a faculty member by his students, residents, and fellows. His research has spanned the scope of plastic surgery from hand and microsurgery, craniofacial to cosmetic surgery, and has focused on using basic engineering principles as applied to plastic surgery. He has nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has held multiple grants. He is the co-inventor and holds a patent on a method to treat cellulite, as well as a patent on DISC, a method to optimize the use of Botox.
Dr. Dagum has always felt strongly about giving back not only to our own local community, but also worldwide. He has been involved in global health for most of his career and volunteered on multiple surgical trips. He currently serves on two boards of volunteer organizations, Smile Rescue Fund for Kids, and Blanca’s House. In 2005, he led a team of hand surgeons in one of the world’s first double hand replantations which received worldwide media attention. He has sponsored and brought many children from overseas with complex craniofacial anomalies to Long Island, where he has performed plastic surgical reconstruction to help restore their lives. Their tragic stories and difficult past together with the goodwill of the faculty, staff, and the local community to provide them with a new chance at life has captured the hearts of many people across the country.
